URI (Upper respiratory infection) or ‘Common cold’ is probably one of the most frequently occuring infectious disease in humans. It is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. There is no cure for common cold, only its symptoms can be treated. Sore throat and runny nose are typically the initial symptoms of cold followed by cough and sneezing. These could also be accompanied with fever and headache. While there are more than 200 different types of viruses that cause the common cold, the most common one that causes cold is the Rhinovirus. Since there are so many types of viruses known to cause common cold, and also because new viruses constantly keep developing, it is difficult for our bodies to create resistance against all of them. This is the reason why you see recurrence of common cold being so frequent.
Typically, the common cold virus is transmitted via aerosols or when you come in contact with an infected individual. Even though there is no cure as such for common cold, you could reduce the severity and treat these symptoms by the below mentioned homemade remedies for some quick relief.
Honey and Turmeric: Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric with 1 tablespoon of raw honey. Mix this concoction well and consume it 3 to 4 times a day. This combination is known to treat dry cough. You could also prepare turmeric tea by adding 1 teaspoon of turmeric to boiling water along a pinch of black pepper powder. Mix it well and add some lemon into it. And voila, your tea is ready!
Ginger Lemon tea: Finely chop or grate fresh ginger root. Pour some boiling water into a cup, add the grated / chopped ginger into it. Let this mixture stay for few minutes. You can either strain the liquid or let the ginger stay in your tea. Flavor it with a spoonful of freshly squeezed lemon juice. You can even have this drink on a regular basis in order to boost your immunity.
Salt water gargles: A sore throat is very difficult to deal with, sometimes it makes it very difficult to even swallow your own saliva. You can temporarily soothe a sore throat by gargling with luke warm salt water.
Turmeric Milk: Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of milk, boil this mixture. Drink this mixture while it is warm. Presence of curcumin which has antibiotic properties makes turmeric one of the best ingredient to prevent and cure the symptoms of common cold.
Chamomile Tea: Studies suggest that this fragrant tea, contains compounds that help fight against infections caused by the common cold virus.
A combination of a couple of these homemade remedies will surely help you get rid of a cold faster. Along with these homemade remedies, a balanced nutritious diet comprising enough quantity of vegetables, fruits and a good amount of fluid intake is also very crucial especially while you are sick in order to maintain a good immune system.
